Cosmic Chaos

Post by Shattered Onyx » 6/27/18 08:17 PM

Midnight. Saturday 23'th of June, 1818 Anno Astrum. The skies are clear, giving the skygazers of the whole princessdom of Equestria a beautiful view of the firmament. That is, until a bright light invades the night sky.

A star fell through the darkness of the night, turning the midnight into the brightests of summer's days, a light that soon faded with a strong impact. The location of this impact, was a relatively important farm south of the Galloping Gorge, in the plains of the Unicorn Range, a farm known as the Sunspin Farm. The Comet known as the 'Sleeper', a chunk of celestial rocks that used to orbit Celestia's sun in intervals of a thousand years, fell right on the farm's windmill, the sheer force of the impact affecting the farm, the following fallout of bits of ice and rock bombarding the surrounding hectares of wheat and hay, contaminating it with radiations and magic beyond this world.

Merely hours after the fatal crash, a team of Fireguards -Coast Guards, specialists in hazardous materials and quarantine proceidures- was sent to the comet's impact zone, raising a containement runic wall around the affected acres of farmland, creating a field of Dead Magic and a powerfull kinetic barrier, effectively isolating the Sleeper inside a bubble, whose only access was through the field's weakest spot, wich was soon patched out with a stone gate. An emergency quarantine that, sadly, also contained the family that owned the Sunspin farm, and all its workforce. Nopony, nothing, could go in, or out.

Until a few days later, the 26'th of June, 1818 Anno Astrum.

A small expedition of Fireguards was sent to the quarantine area, to obtain samples of the Comet, and deliver basic supplies to the Ponies, cows and pigs still inhabiting the farm. Equipped with special armor and runes to prevent any effects from offworld radiations and isolation from any materials they might be exposed to, they were more than prepared to come in contact with this celestial object...

But only one of the four Ponies sent returned.

And she brought with her an unique cristalline structure, safely held inside a magical glass cage. The crystal gently vibrated with pure magic, the light it reflected was of a faint azure color. Any Unicorn could feel that it was teeming with otherworldy magical propperties, ones that could be harvested and used for anypony's will. So much that this sample had to be contained and sent away, to be studied.

But the fate of the rest of the expedition remained to be a mystery. So is the state of the creatures that once lived in the farm.

Wich is why, a few days later, the Fireguard, in conjuction with the Solar, Lunar, and even Celestial Guard, seeked for fatefull individuals capable of dealing with this strange situation. Individuals willing to take part in a possible rescue operation. Individuals willing to endanger their life in the name of science. Individuals capable of containing the growth of these magical crystals, wich started to grow out from the fertile soil at an alarming pace.

You, are among those individuals, contacted by either the Fireguard, the Solar, Lunar or Celestial Guard -Or perhaps, a more obscure kind of group-, to lend a hoof... Or claw, to discover what secrets this otherworldy chunk of rock hides from everyone's eyes.

// This Roleplay will take place in the days following the quarantine of the Comet's crash. It is, at heart, a Rescue opperation, but character interests might be woven into it. It will include a bit of adventure, combat, and travel through means achievable only by otherworldy means. Character death can occur -But it won't be permanent. The reward at the end is high, but so is the risk. Feel free to send yours trully a message if you're intrigued, or a poke on this thread. This thread will act as both, advertizement for the Roleplay, and for the roleplay itself thanks to the magic of post editing. Once there's enough participants, it will begin. It's requested a minimal of effort from each participant, for this to run smoothly and uninterrupted.

There's four members in the party -But it's still early enough for a few more to jump in!

Hope to hear from you! Happy hunting!

Evening, 28'th of June, 1818 Anno Astrum.

The sky above was teeming with clouds, unnatended since the quarantine was set in place above the Unicorn Range. Clouds covered Luna's moon, giving the area an eerie darkness, interrupted only by the faint light coming from the mill, in the exact centre of the farm.

The tall stole wall, with several runes carved into them that surrounded the farm was constantly guarded by Lunar guards, after the shifts changed. They were given orders to persuade anypony darefull enough to get close, to go away, unless they came towards the southern entrance, the one and only way to enter and leave the Dead Magic field surrounding the farm.

And in this entrance, is where a very, particuliar group was supposed to meet.

Several Ponies were contacted the days following the dissapearance of 3/4's of the first expedition sent into the crash site, the only survivor, too traumatized to even speak, the shine in her eyes having changed, too. Worrying symptoms that forced the Guard to look for more, morally questionable individuals for this precarious task. A mission of search, rescue and recovery.

In front of the tall, stone gate, a few Fireguards, all sporting Hazmat suits with runes worn above them, were waiting for the first members of the second expedition to show up, idly chatting and re-reading the field notes they had. An array of scientific and arcane instruments littered the sides, taking readings of the radiations and strong magic emmanating from the inside of the field, wich for the time being, seemed stable enough to let things in and out through the only entryway.

Now, they could only wait for the brave, volunteers, to show up. A set of propper protection equipment was waiting on a nearby table, with some spares waiting in a locker not too far off, in case they were needed. Hazardous material protective suits, isolation and protection runes, healing potions, cleansing water... Nothing less to protect life from this unknown aberration from the stars.

With some hope, they all will make it back in one piece. Preferably, with the ponies that went missing.

Report to the Manehattan Wondetbolt Airfield where you’ll be taken to the Black Site. There you’ll rendezvous with your commanding officer. Show them your documents and they’ll know who you are.

P.S. This is your last chance Kitty, fly straight.

Captain Mirage

“Bitch,” Kitty muttered and stuffed the note in her duffel. She flipped her aviators down as the sun came into view from the cruiser. They were over the Celestial Sea but she could make out the coast in the distance. The baby blue Pegasus wore the uniform of the Fireguard, brand new- damn thing itched like crazy and a pair of lieutenant’s bars sat on her collar. Her cat-like eyes flicked up as the seatbelts icon flashed red on the vidslab.

Kitty secured her seatbelt and pulled her I.D. out. Her pretty mug was printed on the plastic with the name Masquerade printed next to it with a comedy and sorrow masks cutie mark underneath. Mirage loved her ironic aliases. Kitty felt a smirk tugging at her lips. The cruiser began its descent.... into a fortress? She could tell the flight patterns of the guard manning the walls from her seat, all four branches were here.

“What the fuck have you gotten me into Mirage?”

Necromancers weren’t really all that welcome in this day and age, in fact the very word ‘Necromancer’ was a dirty word, the ones who brought the dearly departed back from the brink of death as mindless servants were usually shunned. Not that Lady Quill cared what anyone thought of her, she didn't view her talent as something bad, but rather something useful, and it wasn't like she was raising the dead all willy-nilly, that would be stupid! Also, not everything raised from the brink of death was a hungry and stupid eating machine, there were the rare few that were still themselves, if only a little, who were even more helpful than the ones that tore things apart for the warmth that the living had and they didn’t.

She did dabble in a few other arts as well, but her main skill, her main magick school was Necromancy and with it a plethora of other such skills fell into place, sub-skools as it were, Thumaturgy for example, blood magics, and another would be rune magics, oh and we musn't forget Puppetry, the art of imposing your will upon another lesser creature and controlling them, puppetry came in hoovy when dealing with the newly raised hungry undead, the ones who only wanted to devour and destroy…the ‘cannon fodder’ in wars, puppetry made controlling them so much easier (as well as controlling those foolish non-undead who let their guard down around her). Finally there was the Chronomancy, she did not use that particular school often however, the manipulation of time took a great toll on those who figured it out. To balance herself out, she also decided to learn Toxicology and Herbology, because the knowledge of plants and how to use them was a magic in its' self.

The unicorn mare in question was a grey one, with a tri-colored mane, a mix of Black, green, and purple, her mane was long and it framed her face nicely, Her features were sharp and her eyes were a deep shade of blue, almost angry sea blue, with flecks of red here and there, the flecks having been known to shimmer when she was casting, or she lost her temper, and they pulsed in an almost hypnotizing manner from time to time as well, her cutie-mark, a white quill inked in crimson, very clearly blood, she felt suited her well, for the quill did in fact hold more might than any bladed weapon.
When she arrived at the located she had been pulled to she stopped and glanced around slowly, taking in whoever was here, one would be able to tell that this mare was nothing like the average one, there was something about her, something off...
Perhaps it was the amused smile that played upon her muzzle ever so slightly.

Moondancer arrived on the seen in a splash of teleportation magic, sniffing once, and then looking around the assembly area. Almost immediately her horn glowed, and a quill and scroll came out, jotting down notes. Given Moon's skill at magic and overall knowledge that spanned multiple disciplines, she felt herself a natural for this mission, and the chance to explore such an impressive artifact before Sparkle and her rainbow beams of friendship blasted down was a plus.

Still, this was a dangerous mission, and she had come prepared. Well, prepared by her standards, with field books on a variety of subjects along with the proper spells she had memorized, and scrolls for the ones she had not, all held withing a magical satchel designed to resist the elements and some moderate amount of magical damage.

She gathered her courage, remembering an old quote: "When you walk to the edge of all the light you have and take that first step into the darkness of the unknown, you must believe that one of two things will happen. There will be something solid for you to stand upon or you will be taught to fly."

"Here's hoping for some alicorn wings," she muttered wryly to herself.

The letter from her contact caught her by surprise. The mare, Kross as she was known most commonly now, had been resting on the down low after a nasty encounter, and was stepping back awhile for recovery. It was the last weeks of her somewhat forced rehabilitation period, and the pale, grey blue mare had woken up to find a letter slipped under the door of her room. She had a good friend in the guards department, (going by C.J), who had apparently vouched, and or volunteered her for this mission.
Wonderful.
Well, it was unsure if she was going to be payed, or if she would even come back, but She owed C.J. quite deeply. Kept her from dealing with certain consequences of certain encounters, and she was not one to forget that kindness. So, after tying her Dark mane back, grabbing her armoured cloak, and roughly renewing some of the runes on her Glaive, the mare would have set off to the location, arriving along with the others. Hopefully the preparation’s would be of use to protect her, and her items. She did her best to semi ignore the guards as she came up to the group. She would look carefully around, observing nd internalising what she could from there. She had likely recovered enough to get back out there. Or so she reassured herself.

And the team was assembled.

The four mares had the priviledge of whitnessing the marvels of modern arcane sciences first-hoof. The Fortress that was built from night to day around the farm was nothing to sneeze at, with several warding runes inscribed into the cold stone every 10 metres, forming a perfectly circular wall around the Dark Zone, as some called it.

They were all welcomed, led towards the entrance of the 'Airlock' that went to the insides of the brewing disaster. In there, a group of scientists and Fireguards were waiting, to give them the necesary equipment and instructions. Promeniently, an Unicorn in a Hazmat suit, with the badge of Fireguard Captain imprinted on his shoulder. And damn, he was tall.

Stepping forwards, he spoke, muffled by the protective mask. "Ladies, welcome to the Black Site. My name is Obvious Solution, but you can call me Captain." He said, introducing himself to the party, giving a slight disgrunted look towards them all, having heard (and read) of some of their doings. "I'll sum it up. A Comet crashed here a week or so ago, bringing with it magically-infused materials. Dangerous stuff for the body and mind. We sent a group to investigate, but only one Pony came back. So you're all going in to find them." He said, soon levitating four bright yellow hazardous material suits, of their approximate size. If not a bit bigger, and offered one for each.

"While at it, there's the option to bring whatever you find that looks either valuable, or alien in nature. Bring it to us, and we'll give a little bonus to your reward. If you make it back in one piece. Wich gets me to my next point."

With that, the Stallion turned around, and picked up four backpacks. They all had a small rock attached to it, with a glowing green rune on it. He offered it to them afterwards. "This is a Warding rune pack. Put hazardous materials inside, and for the love of all that's holy, don't take off either while inside the zone. Otherwise we'll have to put you in quarantine. Is that clear?" He asked, in that authoritative tone any captain can muster.

They were offered two pieces of vital equipment. A reinforced Hazardous Materials suit, wich allowed the usage of all kinds of magic, and protected the user from anything that's dangerous to come in contact with, and a Warding Rune, to protect their body and mind from the effects of whatever was inside. Plus, it doubled as a safe storage for samples.

They were clearly getting into something big. Redemption, a reward, science... And perhaps, wings, awaited to these four dareful spirits. They only had to wear what they were given, and step into the airlock.

Of course, the rewards only come if they survive the otherworldly challenges that lie in wait...

The grey mare would accept the suit and the bag, her eyes half lidded as she looked them over, there was a nice enchantment to the bag and that pleased her, at least these ponies were not slouches when it came to spells, she had wondered if she was going to have to reinforce it, but no, it was fine.

She got dressed and situated and then looked at the others, her deep blue eyes searching them all, taking in details, taking in little things here and there, she would then coo softly, "Should we do the polite thing and at least introduce ourselves?" she asked, her tone was almost dismissive, distant, yet beguiled at the same time, there was still that ghost of a smirk playing at her muzzle.
She had heard the one with the glasses mention alicorn wings, why would anyone want such a thing? Only brought more trouble if anything, and what made her think she was worthy of the wings? Not everyone got to be a princess after all, and Quill was fine with that, she didn't need the wings to validate her self.
what she was after was something else entirely, from the plants that still grew there, to the minerals and stones, she was looking for things she could use in her casting.

She was looking for long lost treasure that survived.
What kind of treasure you ask?
Why....the most valuable of all....Books.
Perhaps there were some still out there, and if not, well, she had plenty of other things to occupy her, three other things in-fact.

“Great, a clam bake,” she muttered with a smirk, barely paying her team members a glance. Kitty pulled her duffle over and fixed her combat harness in place, tightening the straps and clips she felt at home in the thick, bulletproof armor. Lastly she shoved her hoof into the duffle. When she pulled it up a slender, black bracer was fixed to it. She felt the nine inches of steel through the fine enchanted leather, boarded by Luna herself.

Archaic sure, but damned effective. There was a reason only one pony came back, and it wasn’t from something as simple environmental dangers. Perhaps one or two would have perished from the first team but four out of five, something took out hose ponies. Kitty felt her stomach open in a familiar anticipation. Just like every other mission, assess and if necessary, eliminate.

Lastly she hurriedly pulled on the hazmat suit. It was snug with her equipment but not so bad. It would annoy Kitty to no end to have her wings confined but she’d manage. She clipped the I.D. on the suit.

“Masquerade,” she saluted, slipping into the role of a fresh out of the gate agent. “Reporting for duty, Captain.”

She would sigh silently as the others spoke, quickly realising that there was going to be some conflict between them. At least some stubbornness or arguments in their future. The tone of the unnerving mare beside them mildly concerning, or perhaps just irritating. Best to ignore it, and try to move forward as a unified front, to avoid trouble. “Sounds like a good start. Kross Underbrook. Just Kross if you will.” She would reply to the mares suggestion of introductions.

“Are personally enchanted belongings allowed out onto the field. Sir?” She would ask to Obvious as she pulled off her cloak and glaive temporarily. Somewhat awkwardly putting on the Hazmat suit. Not like regular cloth, that’s for sure, but would certainly work. She could practically feel the magic coming from the warding rune. Runic magic was the only magic she worked in, the others she vaguely knew how to detect and sometimes protect herself from. But otherwise, she was in the dark. It seemed strong, and the reactions of the others led her to believe it was well made.

If the reply was a positive, she would reattach her cloak and Blaine over the Hazmat suit, along with the pack. They were well enchanted. Hopefully Enough to protect them and perhaps her from the hazards they would undoubtedly encounter. She was not looking for redemption. Nor fame of success, and the rewards she had already brushed off as simply a bonus, as this was after all, the returning of a favor to a friend. For her this was more of something to set her mind to. An adventure, or a goal, to keep her occupied, and help some folks along the way.
